Singapore Childhood Cancer Registry

History Functions Aims Notification process Data Requests

History

Supported by the Training and Research Fund of the Children's Cancer Foundation (CCF), the Singapore Childhood Cancer Registry (SCCR) was established in September 1997 under the auspices of the Paediatric Oncology Group (Singapore) or POG (S) and has since been administratively part of the Department of Paediatric Subspecialties (Haematology/ Oncology Service), KKH.

Functions

CCR registers all children, aged 18 and below, diagnosed with haematological or solid malignancies. Surveillance activities presently cover 2 institutions namely KKH and NUH. Cases notified to the CCR will in turn be reported to the population-based Singapore Cancer Registry (SCR).

Aims

With the improved cure rates over the past 2 decades, death records of childhood cancer are no longer indicative of its incidence. It has thus become even more important to analyse survival and etiology of childhood cancer in the local population.

In an effort to maintain a complete database, SCCR seeks to:

  1. Carry out epidemiological studies.
  2. Facilitate multi-institutional clinical trials in the evaluation of treatment efficacy.
  3. Collaborate in any research project in relation to childhood cancer.
  4. Serve as an automatic reminder to physicians for continued follow up of long term survivors.

Notification process

Cancer surveillance activities by the SCCR rely heavily on the initiative of physicians to notify the registry at the first definitive diagnosis of a malignant neoplasm in a child.

The Registry aims to attain a hospital-based database in order to benefit all practitioner-researchers, other health professionals regardless of institutional affiliation. It is thus vital that all cases, whether diagnosed in a government or private medical establishment, be notified to the Registry.
